Let us praise the giants of science fiction: Campbell, Asimov and, yes, L. Ron Hubbard

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/let-us-praise-the-giants-of-science-fiction-campbell-asimov-and-yes-l-ron-hubbard/ - October 31 at 2:02 PM There’s an old joke about the golden age of science fiction being 12 — that is, the age when young people discover and then devour as much sf as they can find. Alec Nevala-Lee even quotes the remark in this enthralling account of science fiction’s other golden age — the period between 1939 and the mid-’50s when John W. Campbell Jr. edited the magazine Astounding. (Dey Street) Until recently, science fiction took particular pride in its past. New fans were expected to know such influential works as Robert Heinlein’s Future History stories, A.E. van Vogt’s “Slan” and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy. Contrary to a present-day misperception, the genre — while overwhelmingly a boys club — didn’t post a sign on its treehouse reading “No Girls Allowed.” Nevala-Lee lists just some of the distinguished female writers that Campbell published

Excited about Star Trek: Lower Decks? Give the "70s cartoon a try

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/excited-about-star-trek-lower-decks-give-the-70s-cartoon-a-try/ - In the ’70s cartoon, the crew of the USS Enterprise explored new worlds and had exciting adventures.  Video screenshot by Bonnie Burton/CNET What I remember most as a young Star Trek fan in the 1970s was how exciting it was to eat my breakfast — most likely a giant bowl of Rice Krispies — while sitting in front of the TV on Saturday mornings, watching Captain Kirk, Mister Spock, Lieutenant Uhura and the crew of the USS Enterprise embark on a brand new space adventure. Like so many geeky kids, I would watch anything starring the legendary crew of the Starship Enterprise. And seeing them in  Star Trek: The Animated Series made these iconic sci-fi characters even cooler to my young mind. Disclosure: CNET earns commissions from the services featured on this page. So with the recent news that a new animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks , is beaming onto CBS All Access , I can’t hel

What happened to all the women in science fiction?

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/what-happened-to-all-the-women-in-science-fiction/ - Chicago, as you’re aware, is the city of the future, the inevitable metropolis, the place the East Coasters will fall back to when Brooklyn sinks and West Coasters will retreat to when the Earth crumbles. We are demographically diverse and heavily surveilled, we understand better than most the pain of postindustrialization, driverless vehicles will be here sooner than later, and our climate is less likely to devour us tomorrow. According to Bloomberg recently, the future, at least in the United States, “looks a lot like Chicago.” Apparently in the interest of prep work, science fiction is having a moment here. The new One Book, One Chicago read is “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick, who was born in Chicago and died at 53 in 1982, after a life marked by paranoia, drug abuse and existential epiphany; his stories, adapted into “Minority Report,” “Total Recall” and the “Blade

The Wandering Earth could be China"s breakout sci-fi blockbuster film

Image
New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/the-wandering-earth-could-be-chinas-breakout-sci-fi-blockbuster-film/ - China isn’t typically known for its science fiction blockbusters, but a new trailer for an upcoming film called The Wandering Earth has all the hallmarks of a big, Hollywood-style genre movie: it features a dramatic story of the Earth in peril, complete with eye-popping scenes of spaceships escaping Earth. The Wandering Earth is based on a story by Cixin Liu, the author best known for The Three-Body Problem, and, more recently, Ball Lightning . In the original story, scientists discovered that the sun is on the verge of turning into a red giant, and when it does, it’ll expand beyond the orbit of Mars, incinerating all of the solar system’s potentially habitable planets. They concoct a desperate plan to move Earth out of the solar system to a new star, Proxima Centauri. The story begins with the early life of a young boy who was born just after engineers stopped Earth’s rota
