New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/screenrant-com/ - Advertising [x] by Alex Leadbeater – on Jun 30, 2018 in SR Originals We’re already six months into 2018, and it’s proven a pretty big year for movies. The international box office has already passed $6 billion – a new record – thanks in no small part to Marvel gangbusters Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War , the latter of which became only the fourth film to pass $2 billion. Many rival tentpoles didn’t fare so well, although we still got the likes of Deadpool 2 , Ready Player One and Incredibles 2 . Outside of superheroes, horror’s current wave has continued, with A Quiet Place and Hereditary in particular showing in very unique ways that tension is still a key appeal. Some of 2018’s biggest movies are still to come, both in terms of major studio releases – Mission: Impossible – Fallout ,  Creed II , Aquaman – and more awards-focused fare – First Man , BlacKkKlansman ,  Suspiria – but halfway through it’s definitely

(AP) – A robot with true artificial intelligence is about to invade space. The large, round, plastic robot head is part of SpaceX’s latest supply delivery to the International Space Station. Friday’s pre-dawn liftoff also includes two sets of genetically identical female mice, 20 mousestronauts that will pick up where NASA’s identical twin brother astronauts left off a few years ago. Super-caffeinated coffee is also flying up for the space station’s java-craving crew. As intriguing as identical space siblings and turbo-charged space coffee may be, it’s the German robot – named Cimon, pronounced Simon, after a genius doctor in science fiction’s “Captain Future” – that’s stealing the show. Don’t worry about AI running amok on the space station. Cimon’s human handlers promise the first AI space bot will behave. No mutinous takeovers l

Harlan Ellison, sci-fi master, dies at 84

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/harlan-ellison-sci-fi-master-dies-at-84/ - Harlan Ellison, the pugnacious author of A Boy and His Dog, who lambasted society in nightmare fiction and stinging essays for half a century, has died. He was 84. Bill Schafer, an editor at the author’s publisher, Subterranean Press, said Ellison died on Wednesday. Ellison was best-known and lauded for science fiction, but his prolific work included mysteries, comic books, articles and screenplays. Some of his most popular works were surrealistic fantasies set in grisly worlds run by totalitarians and conformists. Some were humorous; many were shockingly graphic. A Boy and His Dog portrays a world devastated by nuclear war. Its hero is a young thug lured to an underground community who rebels against its sterility. The novella was the basis for a 1975 movie starring Don Johnson. Ellison also wrote for major TV series such as Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Outer Limits and Babylon 5 and won numerous award

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/harlan-ellison-prolific-and-pugnacious-writer-of-science-fiction-dies-at-84/ - Harlan Ellison, a prolific writer who was lauded for his science fiction, fantasy, crime fiction, horror and television scripts, but who had such a penchant for pugnacity that his own book jackets called him “possibly the most contentious person on Earth,” died June 27 at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 84. His death was announced by his agent, Susan Shapiro. The cause was not disclosed. Ellison began publishing stories in the 1950s, writing in part to spite a college professor who told him he had no literary talent. He became one of the most popular and influential writers of science fiction of his generation — yet was willing to take a swing at anyone who limited him to the sphere of science fiction. He preferred the term “speculative fiction” and saw himself as an heir to such writers as Franz Kafka and Jorge Luis Borges. Ellison published scores of

That Time Harlan Ellison Tried to Date Black Canary

New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/that-time-harlan-ellison-tried-to-date-black-canary/ - Share On Facebook The late Harlan Ellison was one of the most famous and successful science fiction and fantasy writers in the United States during the 20th Century. His success and his fame made him a hero to many and that idolization led to Ellison actually appearing as a character in an issue of Justice League of America in one of the strangest Justice League stories of all-time, as Ellison wreaks havoc while trying to date Black Canary. Science fiction and fantasy have always had a large impact on the world of comic books and right from the earliest days of the comic book industry, there were comic book editors who looked to their idols in the science fiction industry to see if they wanted to write comic books, as well. Julius Schwartz and Mort Weisinger had been literary agents for science fiction authors early in their career and when they each went to work for DC Comic

The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Movies of 2018 So Far

Image
New Post At https://sciencefiction.site/the-best-sci-fi-and-fantasy-movies-of-2018-so-far/ - We list the 10 greatest speculative fiction films from the first half of the year, ranked. Three months after I tried and failed to do a proper list of the best science fiction and fantasy movies of 2018’s first quarter, things are looking a little better for the speculative fiction genres. Part of that is thanks to the start of the blockbuster movie season, though a lot of tentpoles, including works from Marvel and Pixar, failed to meet my expectations to the fullest. Yeah, I’m a tough critic. But for me, sci-fi and fantasy are genres with high bars. There’s still only a few exceptional works among the bunch below, but the rest are definitely recommended. If there’s anything worthy that I’ve missed, send me a note and I’ll consider it for the next pass. I should point out, though, that yes, I’ve seen most of the big releases you might think I’ve overlooked. Except for  Upgrade . That one came
